this is where i play catch-up, i suppose. movies. i saw paprika and knocked up with matt. the first was an anime about dreams and reality; it was really smart and…confusing in parts. it’s something i would want to watch again to try to grasp more. lots of replay value. i normally don’t like anime, i guess. but the trailer looked like miyazaki’s work (spirited away, howl’s moving castle), and i love that stuff. knocked up was so much better than i ever thought it would be. i related to so many scenes in it, and i think it had a lot of depth and beauty for a romantic comedy. i still haven’t seen the 40 year old virgin, but judd apatow clearly has a genius for portraying real life. i put in my two weeks at the restaurant. it was an interesting diversion, but i don’t have time in my life to do something so stressful as fine dining. i don’t work in that capacity. i’m an asshole to assholes. i need a job where i’m not servile and fake all day. actually, i don’t mind doing retail again, but my last two jobs have involved a lot of sweating–dean and deluca’s huge chef coats and poor ventilation, and the restaurant’s running dishes and rushing through the hot summer garden to total bitches. hate it. AC. it’s all about AC and nice customers and chill coworkers. ryan is supposed to send me more pictures this weekend. i hope they’re as good as the one in the last post. - what you know bout me? what you what you know bout me? …my lip gloss is poppin, my lip gloss is cool. all the boys keep jockin, they chase me after school school. filed under: misc and music and movies and new york city | comments: none |
yeaaaaaaaaaah. i LOVED grindhouse. it should have done better, and the fake trailers were HILARIOUS. so. i can’t wait. —– Danny Trejo Says “Machete” is a Go Ftopel writes: “Danny Trejo surprised and pleased fans by announcing that he will definitely be making a feature length film of “Machete,” the fake trailer that opens “Grindhouse.” At this point, even if The Weinstein Company did not plan to move forward, who’s going to say no to Danny Trejo? “That’s going to be a blast,” Trejo bragged. “They’re going to make that. In fact, call Bob Weinstein and Harvey and tell them that I said so.” “Machete” could even be Robert Rodriguez’s next movie. “They were going to try to make ‘Sin City [2]’ before ‘Machete’ but now they want to do ‘Machete’ first. Oh yeah, oh yeah, they’re going to make that. That’s a definite.” With a half hour of footage already shot and Rodriguez sitting on the script for years, it should not take long to complete “Machete.” “It’s kind of amazing. I think Robert Rodriguez kind of planned it that way because he told me about ‘Machete’ five years ago.Robert wants to make that into a feature and I said, ‘Okay, let’s do it. I got the time.’ So it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Trejo is still attached to “Sin City 2,” but Rodriguez has not told him what he would play. “I have no idea. Maybe I’ll beat up Marv. I’m just waiting to say yes. They haven’t started. I think they want to do ‘Machete’ before they do ‘Sin City 2.’” There is also talk of releasing “Machete” in time with the “Grindhouse” DVD, but Trejo was less specific on those details. “I’m not sure what they want to do with that. I think they’re going to release the DVD with ‘Grindhouse’ and then put ‘Machete’ out there. ‘Machete’ wouldn’t be that hard to do.”" filed under: misc and movies | comments: none |
i just saw a little slice of heaven. no, not a new vag shot of britney, but pedro almodóvar’s women on the verge of a nervous breakdown. i count him as one of my favorite directors just from the handful of films i’ve seen–all about my mother, anyone?–so when i get a chance to catch up on his back catalogue, it’s always wonderful. From IMDB: “A woman’s lover leaves her, and she tries to contact him to find out why he’s left. She confronts his wife and son, who are as clueless as she. Meanwhile her girlfriend is afraid the police are looking for her because of her boyfriend’s criminal activities. They talk to a female lawyer, who turns out to be the lover’s new lover, and everyone’s path keeps crossing each other’s in a very complicated and confusing manner.” Pedro makes everything so magical in his movies. Things come to you in little morsels, every sound and visual somehow arriving both subtly and melodramatically. I don’t really know how he does it. It has that intensely foreign feel, one where everything is just a little off from the normal aesthetic of film making. Carmen Maura is brilliant as Pepa; the desperation and slight insanity flicker in her eyes and rash movements. She is somehow still warm and likable, even as she treats everyone with indifference and (sometimes) cruelty. Julieta Serrano plays the similarly desperate, and more-than-slightly insane ex-wife of the same “lover” whom everyone seems to be pining after. Besides that fierce getup you see in the picture above, the entire character is so over the top that you can’t help but love the crazy bitch. This was the film that introduced Pedro to America. It was nominated for a Best Foreign Picture Oscar, and it’s obvious why. Check out the trailer here; I couldn’t find it on YouTube. filed under: misc and movies | comments: 3 comments |
