Education: An Enemy of Religion?

We all remember the Republican primaries in 2012, and, we all remember that the second candidate to win most votes, after Mitt Romney, was the former Pennsylvania Senator, Rick Santorum. A devout Catholic, he is well-known for his staunch opposition to teaching evolution in schools, gun control, climate change and sanctions against Iran.

But one of the most controversial (to say the least) public declarations was the one in which he opposed public higher education. So Obama wanted more young Americans to go to college, while Santorum was against it, calling the President a “snob”.

But the most interesting fact here is Santorum’s argument: higher education is just a means of indoctrinating youth against religion and undermining America’s Christian-based values. According to the former Senator, 62% of those going to college lose their faith during the process!

Well, let’s ignore the conspiracy theory-like claims that the “Left” funds only “anti-religious” teaching institutions and the proposal to respond in the same undemocratic way (by cutting down funds for “Left-wing” universities). The most important issue here is whether education is a threat to religion.

That is a bit odd, since even the most Conservative commentators, including Santorum, have probably graduated from college at some point. Worse than that, it means that religion fears education, information, science, rational thought. It thrives on ignorance, and this idea does not come from a militant Atheist, but right from within: a deeply religious politician acknowledges that knowing more about the world we are living in is a major challenge to religious beliefs.

Should it be that way? Yes, if we are talking about religious organizations, leaders, doctrines that refuse to adapt to the modern world. You can continue denying evolution (just as you could claim that Earth is flat), but then, you should not wonder why believers are ignorant, while educated people are non-religious.
