I just took amazing pictures of Jewel at Herald Square. She was the surprise artist at a radio station event, but I was tipped off by Perez Hilton. The first pic is incredible. filed under: misc and music | comments: 4 comments |
I hate when a film is hyped up to be amazing, and I only find it to be pretty good. Little Children is apparently “The Best Reviewed American Film of the Year” if you believe all of the ads. It’s gotten fantastic reviews in nearly every publication of note, and so I was anxiously awaiting the chance to go to the Angelika and see it. It’s a movie about making the wrong moves in life, and the fact that redemption may come in many different forms, whether drastic or not. I feel that a movie like this is so tricky because it must be done with the right amount of nuance to not come off as didactic and heavy-handed. The redemption rang false to me, and I was unsatisfied by the ending. The acting is fantastic all-around (I actually didn’t find Kate Winslet to stand out, as the reviews promised, but that is not to say she wasn’t great.), but…this one I’ll recommend for the “Wait for DVD” list.
– When Robert Altman died, I felt a little sad that his last movie was A Prairie Home Companion. I thought it was a film that went nowhere, charming in its meandering nature at first, but less than the sum of its parts by the ending credits. Robert Altman, Meryl Streep, Lily Tomlin…It would be hard for this movie to not be a slice of heaven, but it managed, in my mind, to be forgettable. Tonight, I watched the DVD of Gosford Park, and I have to hope that this is the kind of filmmaking Altman for which Altman is remembered. It’s a absolutely charming piece, Clue meets Masterpiece Theatre, and you can’t keep your eyes off what is unfolding before you. The movie contains a million and one famous actors–Maggie Smith, Helen Mirren, Kristin Scott Thomas, and (really.) Ryan Philippe among them–yet Altman’s masterful direction makes each one shine. It’s delicious. filed under: misc and youtube and movies | comments: none |
I’m glad we have people like Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney to keep those activist judges in place. Mitt Romney for President! (Sorry, had to get a little simmering sarcasm out of my system. With a name like Mitt, no wonder he feels so threatened.) Romney seeks Mass. court help on gay marriage ban BOSTON (Reuters) - Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said on Sunday he would ask the state’s highest court to intervene to let voters decide on a proposal to ban gay marriage in the only U.S. state where it is legal. “This week we will file an action before the courts calling upon the judiciary to protect the constitutional rights of our citizens,” Romney, a potential Republican presidential contender in 2008, told a rally organized by opponents of gay marriage. I am considering doing a Political Science major with a History concentration. If I can get (and stay) on the Dean’s List, I’m going to look at law school, too. This triumvirate of fields would have been the last three things I thought I would ever do when I was in high school. Life is so strange sometimes. — In an interview with Fox and Friends this morning, outgoing Chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works James Inhofe (R-OK) argued that the current wave of unprecedented warming is due to “natural changes.” “God’s still up there,” Inhofe said, and to the extent there is warming going on, it is “due to the sun.” He added, “George Soros, the Hollywood elitists, the far left environmentalists on the committee that I chair — all of them want us to believe the science is settled and it’s not.” Watch it. — In a secret end run around Cheney and Rumsfeld, the secretary of state pressed Bush to back the Iraq Study Group — and change the course of the war. Hillary. Nancy. A female presidential candidate in France, Segolene Royal. Condi…Women are takin’ out the trash, big time. filed under: misc and politics | comments: 4 comments |
I’m finding it hard not to agree with this article. I’d pick Giuliani over Lieberman any day of the week. — America’s Mayor v. Wingnut Conservative Zealots …Don’t get me wrong. I’m not throwing my support behind Giuliani. However, if America were to elect another Republican president out of the blood and ashes of the Bush administration, I wouldn’t necessarily hide in my crawl space following the election of President Giuliani (as long as Congress remains Democratic). He surely has his share of scandal and flaws, but really, if there’s going be another Republican in the White House in 2009, I’d rather it be a socially progressive Republican with some real experience in FUBAR crisis management. And I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t vote for him in the general election if he were running against, say for example, Senator Lieberman or DLC commander-in-nothing Senator Bayh. Really. I can’t type their names without becoming enraged or sleepy, respectively. Here’s how I’d handle election day 2008 if it came down to a choice between Rudy and ARG! (Lieberman) or YAWN! (Bayh). I’d walk into the Shouptronic voting booth and press the “X” next to the name of America’s Mayor. Having just voted for a Republican presidential candidate for the first time ever, I’d go home and shower. For a week. Howard Hughes style. And if Rudy were to win, I’d at least breathe easier knowing the next president isn’t 1) a far right religious zealot, 2) a Bush Family human-animal hybrid, or 3) a man who, despite being tortured in Vietnam, was reduced down to a suit filled with really, really white jelly when facing off against President Bush on the Military Commissions Act and detainee torture…. – Also in politics: - Quelle surprise!
